Naturopathy

Information current as at 31st Janurary 2010 | Kellie Ellington NB BHSc DBM

Naturopathy is a holistic system of medicine that focuses on the underlying causes of illness and disease, including physical, emotional and lifestyle factors. Naturopathy provides the foundation of real preventative health care, where we focus on keeping our clients well, not waiting for them to become ill.

Our naturopaths work with herbal medicine, dietary changes, nutritional supplements, Bach Flowers, homeopathic remedies, bodywork, iridology, and/or counseling, depending on each individual’s needs and requirements. Ultimately it is often about finding balance in all aspects of our lives.

We generally start with the all important fundamentals of building health which include a good healthy, wholesome diet and regular exercise, looking at how to manage stress levels and of course making sure our clients are getting some good quality rest.

Naturopathy is a helpful for a wide range of health concerns: menstrual problems, pregnancy and childbirth to menopause; children’s health; digestive system disturbances including inflammatory bowel diseases, liver and gall bladder disorders; stress related illness, anxiety and mild depression; immune system weakness; respiratory infections; chronic and life threatening illnesses.

We are experienced in treating people who are taking other medications and are happy to work with their medical practitioner.

Homeopathy

Information current as at 31st Janurary 2010 | www.homeopathyoz.org | Helen McGuire Dip Adv Hom (Syd) MAHA

Homeopathy is an effective, safe form of medicine. It treats the whole person by stimulating the body’s own healing power.

The basic principle of homeopathy is "like may be cured by like". A simple example: if you drink coffee, it might keep you awake at night. Someone who suffers from insomnia (for reasons not related to coffee) may be prescribed a medicine prepared homeopathically from coffee.

Homeopathy can be useful in treating acute illness; infectious diseases; chronic conditions like asthma or arthritis or migraine; conditions such as depression; in recovery from accidents or sports injuries.

Homeopathic treatment can be used in all stages of life: for babies and small children; for adolescents; for all aspects of women’s health and men’s health; and in the illnesses that accompany ageing.

Reflexology

Information current as at 21st October 2011 | Helen Donovan | Tonia Walker

The principles behind reflexology date back to ancient Egypt and China though its modern form has been practiced worldwide since the 1930s. Using reflexes found in the feet, hands and ears, reflexology stimulates the body’s own natural healing responses.

It is a special form of massage that helps relax and balance the body, improving nerve and blood supply and increasing energy and immunity levels. It relieves stress and can also help with all kinds of conditions, such as asthma, depression, constipation, P.M.S., menopause and headaches. It works well with other therapies including orthodox medicine. Reflexology can also help with fertility and pregnancy and with the newborn.

Somatic Psychotherapy

Information current as at 10 March 2010 | Hugh Churchward RN Dip.S.Psych

Most of the time we are caught up in our thoughts, unaware and out of touch with what we are currently feeling and experiencing. Unknowingly we are reacting to life based on what has happened in the past leaving us fearful and anxious about the future. We find ourselves in the same situations or relationships again and again but we don’t know how we got there.

In an environment that is supportive and safe, the therapist helps us to recognize the ways in which we view the world. This gives us the opportunity to notice how we are reacting and what we are feeling in relation to the many situations we are faced with. These reactions and feelings are often based on events and the environment we found ourselves in from the past. We can clearly see how we live our lives and the many influences upon it. This allows us to make more choices based upon what is happening now, not driven by the events of the past or by our hopes and fears for the future.

Somatic psychotherapy is appropriate for childhood and more recent shock and trauma which can be a contributing cause for serious mental illness including depression, anxiety and certain personality disorders. It is also useful in grief and loss, for relationship issues and changing life circumstances that leave us feeling dissatisfied or confused.

Ortho-Bionomy

Information current as at 21st May 2010 | Hugh Churchward RN Dip.S.Psych

Ortho-Bionomy® is used to treat pain throughout the body. It is a positional release technique where the focus is on the comfort of the client and is non-forceful and indirect. It works on the theory that when bodily parts are moved in the direction they are already pulling, the body is encouraged to relax which open up the door to its natural capacity for self-healing. By “showing” the client’s tissues what they are doing it encourages these tissues to respond in a way that releases the tension. This re-educates them to the possibilities of comfort rather than discomfort or pain. That healing must come from within as well as without for any changes to be lasting is central to the technique.

The seeds of Ortho-Bionomy® were accidently sown in the mid 1960’s by American Osteopath Lawrence Jones with a paper he wrote about a patient suffering from chronic neck pain who was unable to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time. Jones propped his patient up to make him comfortable while he attended to other clients and when he returned found the man fast asleep. Not only that, when the patient woke up he was free of pain.

Inspired by Jones’s “positional release” techniques, British Osteopath and martial artist Arthur Lincoln Pauls began to further explore these principles of using gentle movements to alleviate stress and pain. By 1976 he had developed the phased reflex techniques of Ortho-Bionomy®. It is usually recommended that clients have several consultations in order for the re-education of muscles, nerves and tissue to occur. It opens the door to self-healing because it reminds the body that it can relieve pain itself by making simple positional adjustments, a possibility often forgotten.

Ortho-Bionomy® is suitable for anyone with pain, discomfort or who have suffered an injury or trauma. Because it focuses on the comfort of the client and doesn’t hurt it is also suitable for small children, the elderly, following surgery or those in acute pain or discomfort.

  • 1 hour treatment $70
  • 1 hour treatment for pensioners/students discount $50
  • ½ hour treatment for children $35
